New Silk Road Network’s partner for LCL Rail Consolidation Nordicon, representing Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, has launched a new multimodal service connecting Yantian, China, and Scandinavia via Piraeus, Greece.
Currently offered at the frequency of a weekly departure from Yantian, the service involves transporting the cargo via sea to Piraeus Port and then transloading it onto the rail for further delivery towards Central Europe and finally Scandinavia.
Such a solution was developed as an alternative for customers that are heavily impacted by the congestion in the European ports and the disrupted China – EU rail service passing through Russia. According to Nordicon, the current average transit time for traditional sea freight from China to Scandinavian destinations is around 55-60 days. Using the sea-rail multimodal solution through Piraeus can cut this down by 20 days, making it an attractive alternative.

This concept has proved that ports could function as gateways for cargo going between China and Europe, while at the same time still leveraging the rail connections in Europe.
